January round up

I honestly can't believe that we're approaching the end of January already, it certainly doesn't seem like a whole month ago that I awoke with a stinking headache, no phone and only a hazy recollection of the events of the night before! But somehow it has been, and here's my round up of what I've got up to in the last 31 days:

This January I have:

  • Vowed not to drink too much ever again...my escapades on New Year's Eve cost me my recently upgraded mobile phone and some of my favourite eyeshadows as well as leaving me with a killer hangover, a badly grazed shoulder and severe embarrassment. Methinks I'll leave the drunkenness to other people from now on.
  • Celebrated 4 family birthdays, including my own. I turned 28 on 22nd January and enjoyed a lovely weekend with some of my closest friends and family, during which I was thoroughly spoiled. I really am a very lucky girl! :-)
  • Indulged in some shopping of both the sales and non-sales varieties...pictures will be up as soon as I can get hold of a decent camera!
  • Enjoyed a lovely 9 day holiday from work :-) I didn't really do much, but it was very nice to get up and go to bed when I pleased, go shopping and get my hair done and generally just laze around <3
  • And on the subject of work, I have actually felt more settled in my job and happier with my performance over the last few weeks. Whilst I'm nowhere near as competent and confident as I'd like to be, there have been definite signs of improvement and I'm hopeful that I'm moving in the right direction :-)
  • Seen my best friend J (and her husband) for the first time since last summer. The three of us met up for coffee and a chat on Saturday, and whilst we didn't have much time together ( they were only visiting for the weekend so had a seriously packed schedule!) it was lovely to see her again and catch up with all her news. I was especially delighted to discover that she's 14 weeks pregnant (she's due in late July) and to see a scan picture...I'm seriously so happy for her and her husband S and I can't wait for the new arrival.
  • Indulged in some girl time with 3 of my favourite ladies. We spent a little time shopping, saw "The Sitter" at the cinema and then rounded our afternoon off with a Nandos. It was an absolutely fantastic few hours and we were all agreed that we should make it a regular occurrence; it was the perfect Sunday treat.
  • Enjoyed nights in and out with old friends; these are often some of the highlights of my week and there was no exception this month. I'm so lucky to have such a fantastic group of friends and hope that we'll always be as close as we are now.
And that was my January. How was yours? Did you do anything exciting? Tell all...I'd love to hear from you!

Till next time...

Hello/Goodbye...

I think this picture says it all...don't you?? It's been over 4 months since I've last posted, and that time has been simply filled with "hellos" and "goodbyes". I've met new people and experienced some things for the very first time, whilst saying farewell to others. But throughout all this I've been busy, and that's one of the reasons that my blog break has gone on for quite so long...I knew that before I started blogging again, I wanted to be in a position where I would have time to post regularly and catch up on all my favourite reads. And that time is now. But before I say "Hello" to this new chapter in my blogging adventures, I'd like to bid farewell to the past few months and all it's brought me. So without further ado, here goes:
  • Since the start of November, I've said "Hello" to 3 jobs and also "Goodbye" to two of them. One I was quite relieved to see the back of (although I do miss the fabulous staff discount!) but the thought of coming to the end of my contract at the other has filled me with sadness (especially as ill health made it seem even more unfinished...more on that later).
  • As a result of the increased demands on my time that my jobs brought me, I said goodbye to quite as much free time and hello to evening and weekend schoolwork.
  • Since my blog break began, I've said goodbye 2010 with a fantastic family Christmas and hello 2011 with a house party in Wales along with some of my closest friends.  I've also said goodbye to 26 and my mid-twenties and hello to 27 and my lates (eeeeeeeeeek!) and despite being older and technically wiser, I managed to accompany my first day as a 27 year old with a stinking hangover and churning stomach (which was especially irresponsible considering I was acting in my drama group's panto that day!) As well as my birthday, I've also helped several of my friends and family members welcome their new ages and I've had an absolute ball helping them celebrate :-)
  • I said "hello" and "goodbye" to my drama group's pantomime which took place in late January, and apart from the pre-show nerves, and terrible hangover on my first day, I loved every minute of it. And, a few weeks later, I said "hello" to a new show which we'll be putting on in May.
  • I said "goodbye" to one driving instructor and "hello" to another. I'll also hopefully be saying goodbye to my "L" plates for good in a few weeks...fingers crossed!!
  • My wardrobe has also said hello to a fair few items of clothing, as well as some gorgeous new shoes and accessories. As for goodbyes, there haven't been quite as many...well, what can I say?? I'm a hoarder!
And finally, I said goodbye to my 100% attendance record for this school year. At the back end of last week, the left hand side of my face started feeling painful. Fast forward to Tuesday morning at work, and my colleagues noticed it was swollen. One emergency doctor's appointment later, I've been diagnosed with suspected mumps (the doc was almost 100% sure) and I've been signed off work for up to 3 weeks! The most frustrating thing is that I was due to be finishing one of my jobs this Friday anyway...the spring holiday is coming up and the school I've been working at for 5 months can't afford to keep me on after that because of their limited budget :-( So bang've gone my visions of saying a proper goodbye to the staff, who I've loved working with, and throwing a party for all the children in my groups...and I've said hello to an aching face and hamster cheeks! Plus not to mention the fact that I'm most likely highly contagious , which means no "Ghost the Musical" tonight and probably no friend's hen do on Saturday :-(

But, I'll stop moaning now, as I want to end the post on a high. Because I'm back, at the right time for me, and I can't wait to get back into blogging again :-)

Till next time...

2010 Goals: One Week down, 51 to go!

So we're just over a week into the new year, and I think that I might already be off track when it comes to meeting some of my goals! Eeeek! :-( Although, in fairness, I have made a good start with some of the others and we are only a week in after all. So here's a quick summary of how I'm doing so far: (goals in bold, comments in normal type)

  • Pass my driving theory and practical tests

No real progress yet, but I have got another lesson booked for tomorrow...although I'm not 100% sure if it'll take place yet because of the bad weather. I really need to book a date for my theory test ASAP...I think that'll give me the motivation I need to revise for it!

  • Get a long term/permanent job, preferably as a primary school teacher

I had seen a couple of jobs I was interested in, and was intending to contact the schools in question to get application packs off them, but due to the snow this week, they've been closed so I've been unable to make any progress. Fingers crossed they'll be open on Monday so I can make contact then.

  • Be a better friend

I have been in contact with J more this week, but feel I can't really take the credit for it. She's had some time off work and been staying with her parents who live 5 minutes drive away from me so it was only natural that we arranged to meet up. The real challenge will come now that she's gone back home.

  • Adopt a healthier lifestyle

I'd say that I've definitely been more successful with some parts of this goal than others. Due to the fact that my mum's car's been broken down and that the bad weather conditions have affected public transport, I've definitely been doing a lot more walking lately and on days when I haven't, I've made sure I've done an exercise DVD at home. In terms of cutting down on unhealthy snacks, I'd say I've had an epic FAIL this week. I'm a boredom eater and because I've been off work all week, I've been eating, eating, eating. Hopefully, I'll get back into a proper routine once I'm back at work, and don't have time to snack as much.

  • Read at least 2 books a month from start to finish

Despite the fact my bookshelves are full to bursting, I couldn't find a book that made me want to pick it up. So, no doubt due to my new found Sherlock Holmes obsession (that's a whole other post brewing!), I've ordered the complete set of Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories and am looking forward to getting stuck in when they arrive. I'm especially keen to see how the Sherlock in the books compares with how he was portrayed in the film.

  • Cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning

I didn't get off to a very good start with this, partly because I've been unhappy with the way my current skincare products are working so I haven't seen much point in using them. However, a few days ago, I received the "Soap and Glory" skincare sampler set I ordered just after Christmas, so I've been using that for the last couple of days. Expect a full review in a week or two!

So that's my update! I'm not planning on doing one every week, I sense it'd get boring pretty quickly, so I think in future, I'll just aim for one or two a month instead. Hope everyone has a fab weekend and that you have good luck with your goals if you've set any for 2010! :-)

2010 goals and resolutions (better late than never!!)

I know we're a couple of days into 2010 now, but as it's my first post of the year (and I already said I'd do it), I've decided to post a list of my goals and resolutions for 2010. I was initially planning to do a "101 in 1001" list, but I couldn't think of 101 things that I wanted to achieve, so I decided to make most of the goals on that list things that I want to achieve this year instead!

So without further ado here's what I hope to make happen in 2010:

  • Pass my driving theory and practical tests.
  • Get a long term/permanent job, preferably as a primary school teacher.
  • Be a better friend: talk to/email/text/write to my best friend J at least once a week and initiate contact with other friends more than I currently do
  • Become a better sister/daughter: specifically listen to my family and appreciate them more.
  • Run the Race for Life again this year and better my time from last year.
  • Adopt a healthier lifestyle: cut down on unhealthy snacks and do a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity 3 times a week
  • Read at least 2 books per month from start to finish (without skipping to the end!)
  • Grow my nails
  • Take steps to help overcome my fear of thunder and lightning
  • Put at least 50 pounds into my ISA each month
  • Keep a careful track of my financial incomings/outgoings and set myself a budget
  • Develop my cookery skills
  • Cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning
  • Let go of my baggage from the past once and for all

Looking at the list now it seems to be quite a challenge, but I'd rather try and run the risk of not meeting my goals, than not try at all! Fingers crossed that come December 31st, I'll be able to say I've met all my goals, but if not, at least I'll hopefully be to say that I've given it my best shot! Wish me luck (and willpower!) as I start my journey into 2010!!
